Frequently Asked Questions

Can I be a part of athletics as well as band?

Yes. The positive relationship between the fine arts program and athletic department at Lawrence North is something we value greatly. There is almost never a situation we can't work out. We recognize it can be difficult for students to participate in as many activities or organizations that they would like. Our philosophy is to provide as many opportunities as possible in the band program.

How much time does band require?

We know the marching band schedule can look intimidating. We have a rigorous rehearsal schedule with MPLT in order to give students the experience of a nationally competitive band program. In concert and jazz bands, higher level ensembles have higher after school commitment levels. Wind Ensemble will rehearse more than Symphonic Band will rehearse more than Concert Band. All ensembles have commitments of 3-4 concerts each semester.

Am I good enough to be a part of the program?

Absolutely! You have participated in an excellent middle school program that has equipped you with everything you need.

Does marching band count as a PE credit?

Yes it does!

How are students placed in different bands?

All students have been placed in a band class based on auditions that occur at the end of the school year. If a student demonstrates that they are playing at a level of a different band class, we will make adjustments at the semester break. The directors encourage all students interested in moving up a level to practice the All-Region, All-District, or All-State music. The Wind Ensemble and Symphonic Band students are required to learn the All-Region music and participate in Solo & Ensemble.

What should we do if my student has a conflict with a rehearsal, game or other performance scheduled on the band calendar?

Generally, attendance at all rehearsals, games and performances is mandatory. It is expected that band will be a priority, so please consult the band calendar before scheduling other appointments. If you do have a conflict with any band events, contact the director immediately. Early communication is key. You can find an absence request form on this page.
